Bustling, eccentric, and an “experience that needs to be lived” – why more young people are taking to early morning partying
Since 2016, Morning People have been hosting events up and down Aotearoa which consist of a high-energy, club-like atmosphere, with local and international electronic DJs and the slogan “party hard, work later”.
In light of the growing phenomenon, Canta wanted to find out what is bringing more young people out of bed, bright and early, to take part in this newfound morning ritual.
What made you want to go to a Morning People event?
“I work for Beercycle here in Christchurch and some clients invited me to join them at Morning People. I was a bit surprised at first, seeing a race that early in the morning,” said one young person.
For another, the aspect of being more of a morning person in general made the event appealing.
What makes it so different from going out at night?
The main difference highlighted was that the events are alcohol-free, making a difference in the crowd, “It’s in the early morning, [so a] great way to start your day! It’s alcohol free, you get free coffee and breakfast. The crowds are different, they are there solely to dance,” Anonymous responded.
Another person agreed, “There is no alcohol so that is definitely one of the biggest differences. Instead, there is coffee.”
How would you describe the atmosphere?
Among the words used were, “a freeing experience”, “bustling”, “eccentric”, and “unique”.
Why do you think these events have become so successful?
Mainly, we found young people are going for the uniqueness of the events themselves, and the style of music.
“I think they’ve [been] successful because it’s something different. It’s a style of music that isn’t played a lot down here, plus they bring in local and international artists. It’s a sober event, it’s social, new locations around the city, different DJs, and a strong sense of community even if you have been a few times,” said one person.
“They are something quite unique and I think people like [having] new and different experiences,” said another.
Would you recommend it?
“I would highly recommend going to a Morning People event. Even if early mornings or the style of music isn’t your thing, it’s definitely an experience that needs to be lived once,” said one young person.
