Zonoscope
Cut Copy

4/5

Listening to the first few songs on Cut Copy’s new album Zonoscope you’d be forgiven for assuming you had accidently downloaded an eighties movie soundtrack from some forgotten forerunner to the Breakfast Club. But wait, Zonoscope was released a few weeks ago. Impossible.

The source of inspiration for Zonoscope (and indeed Cut Copy’s previous recordings as well) then is easy to spot. A dash of Talking Heads, new wave, a whole lot of synthesizer, and samples of Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Everywhere’. Though the result is much better than what I expected (an Australian eighties nightmare). Like all great new wave, the numerous layers of synth, drums, and vocals on songs like ‘Blink and You’ll Miss a Revolution’, ‘Hanging on to Every Heartbeat’ and ‘Corner of the Sky’ lock in as smooth as a completed rubix cube. Aside from their obvious talents in the ways of eighties revival, a great thing about Cut Copy is their crossover appeal, as anyone who’s after great music to dance to is bound to become a fan. I mean, who doesn’t (at least secretly) love eighties new wave?
