Welcome To The Undercroft

After a few months of work (and small earthquake delays), the Undercroft is now open for student use.

The development came about as a result of a shortage of student space on campus following the February earthquake (primarily the loss of access to the UCSA Building). In conjunction with the UCSA, the University approved an investment of up to $2.4 million from the capital component for the Student Services Levy for the Undercroft and associated development.

"We are confident that this space will be a vibrant addition to campus for both students and staff and will be well utilised long term, regardless of what plans are implemented in relation to the UCSA Building," the University said in a statement in June.

This is just the first stage of the development; coming soon will be televisions and other AV equipment, and eventually there'll be shops and food outlets dotted around the perimeter. For now there is heating, lots of tables and chairs and couches (many of the chairs created from recycled Coke bottles – flip them over to read their story on their undersides), power points, and some pretty swish lighting.
