Want a job? Coordinating Editor role up for grabs.

Tired of wading through poorly-written job notices and thinking "Man, I could totally write something better than this. Also, I feel like a custard square. Mmm, custard square"?

by Sebastian Boyle

Well, do we have the job for you! Introducing the UCSA Coordinating Editor, where you get to produce an array of student-oriented content for print and online outlets, and be in charge of your very own* 32-page magazine every week!

(* Technically it's not yours, but if you want to walk around and feel like a big shot you can definitely claim that.)

The UCSA is the University of Canterbury Students' Association incorporated, a not for profit organisation established in 1894 aimed at ensuring that the university experience for students at Canterbury is all that it can be. In 1994, we almost elected a cat our president.

Because our last guy got recruited by the CIA for some deep-cover work in the Colombian drug trade, we are looking for a new Coordinating Editor. The Coordinating Editor is there to provide support to the UCSA's Services team in the delivery of media that students find awesome. This includes content for websites and social media, writing press releases and news stories and a gallimaufry of other stuff, and editing Canta, the Association's 81-year old magazine.

This will require you to be able to write, and write well – basically, better stuff than that fumbling poetry you wrote about the unfairness of the world (and, occasionally, trees) in sixth form. It will also require you to source and manage a large team of volunteer contributors, most of whom will be students, so, y'know, be prepared to do a lot of spelling corrections.

Other sweet skills and technical knowledge and experience you should possess include:

  • At least two years experience in a creative team working to tight deadlines (you've got to love you some deadlines)
  • High-level knowledge, understanding and application of media (maybe try watching a lot of Ugly Betty)
  • Experience in analysing, interpreting and acting on customer data (like that time you suggested to the boss at the Riccarton Fish Emporium that the deep fried Brussels sprouts weren't much of a goer with the student market)
  • Proficiency in the use of Adobe Creative Suite 4, MS Office and relevant technology products (it also helps if you can switch on a computer; that stumped our last guy for months)
  • Having a personal commitment to service and an enthusiasm for encouraging others to provide the best service (smiling a bunch is nice, but not to the point that it gets creepy)

(* IMPORTANT NOTE: if you're Batman we will waive all these criteria and simply hire you on the spot.)

If you're the kind of gung-ho superhero described above who would love to work in a high-energy, occasionally demented, student-focused, Red Bull-fuelled creative team, then we'd be honoured if you'd join us. If this sounds like you, please forward your curriculum vitae, covering letter, and some samples of your creative work (note: if your creative work is some kind of artsy pretentious thing that involves sculpting dragons out of meat, just hang on to those for now).

CLOSING DATE FOR APPLICATIONS 28TH OCTOBER 2011

Please send your CV & covering letter to:
