UC engineering student defeats Prime Minister’s security
A UC mechanical engineering student defeated Prime Minister John Key’s best bodyguard in an arm-wrestling match following Key’s appearance at the UC Community Engagement Awards.
The battle came after students invited Key up to the mechanical engineering suite with a sign taped to the lab's window: "John mate, come up for a yarn with your country's future engineers".
Key complied, and after some discussion of his time as a Canterbury student in the early 1980s, a student laid down the challenge. "We want to pit your best security guard against our best arm wrestler."
Key obliged, and soon Diplomatic Protection Squad officer Blue Young locked arms with student Eddy "MadDog" van Oosten.
"Mad Dog's obviously very strong, is he?" Key asked a nearby student, as the warriors prepared. "He looks pretty weak to me."
But Key's assessment proved wrong, as MadDog swiftly defeated Young.
Key praised MadDog's efforts, though it was sadly without reward.
"If I hadn't done the New Year's honours list, I would've given you a knighthood," Key said.
