Canta wins stuff; gets all self-important

Canta represented well at the annual Aotearoa Student Press Association Awards on Saturday night, winning Best Small Publication, along with two other awards and four placings.

by Sebastian Boyle

In a brief interview with himself shortly after the ceremony, Boyle said the win was "like, really... cool, man, this is awesome. Hey, do you know where the bathroom is?"

Judge Jim Mora congratulated the staff on maintaining quality work through "no doubt turbulent, trying times", and praised the magazine's coverage of the earthquake aftermath, use of graphics, and "resourceful page-filling".

"Vibrant reports from student flats and informative analysis make Canta a very good, hard-working publication, with outbreaks of flair. Sebastian Boyle's editorial style is inspired as well, and his summations of the effect of the quakes on student life wise."

Upon hearing these words, Boyle blubbered joyfully, before growing confused. "Wait... outbreaks of flair...!?"

Canta also won best website for its "bold, simple design and use of colour". Judge Russell Brown called it a "smart, well-kept website with a distinctive look".

UCSA web content manager Ryan Astle celebrated the win by smashing a wine glass.

Boyle also won best sports writer, for what judge Steve Kilgallon called a "real story on his own patch of direct relevance to readers".

"Everyone knows I have a real passion for sports," Boyle said. "I don't watch an awful lot, or really ever talk about them, nor do I often participate in them, but when people look at me the first thing they think is 'sports'."

Canta also received placings in best editorial writer, best feature writer, best news writer, and best headline.
