Big Top goes down on UCSA carpark

No longer big, nor on top

by Sebastian Boyle

Last Tuesday marked an end to the UC earthquake era as the Big Top finally came down, a little over six months after it went up.

The Big Top, a marquee hired from Continental Event Hire by the University in February, served a number of purposes over the months. It initially housed the Student Volunteer Army, and was home to piles of baking, piles of gloves and gumboots, and surprise gigs performed by The Eastern, Hollie Smith, and Tiki Taane.

It later went on to house UCSA support services, Student Job Search, Unimart, and remained a student hang-out until the third term.

The move of the UCSA to the James Hight Building and the erection of the AFT tent on C Block lawn reduced its use, before it was closed to students last term.

The Big Top and AFT tent have now been both superseded by the Undercroft, now open in the James Hight Building.
