Supreme Club Awards
Dear Clubs and Societies, THANK YOU for coming out to celebrate the year in style. It was an absolute pleasure to give you a night to say thank you as you all markedly deserved it.
Last Wednesday the Undercroft was transformed for the swankiest night on the clubs calendar, the Supreme Club Awards. Amidst courses of a buffet dinner, representatives of campus clubs found out who was tops in 2011…
Best Academic Club
The club or society that has made the most significant, positive contribution to the academic achievement of its members.
Winner: ENSOC
Ensoc isn't just about the Undie. Their members receive support through the first pro handbook, tutorials, career fairs and development sessions.
COMPSOC – Create-a-thon Challenge, tutorials, web computing seminars, software workshop, post-graduate workshops, and career events.
LAWSOC - 100- and 200-level tutorials, 1st year "buddy system".
Best Religious Club
The club or society that has best represented and promoted the spiritual well-being of its members.
Winner: Christian Union
Weekly meetings, Bishop Julius and R & R hall bible studies, camps, life development through Christianity and leadership development. Cross-club events.
Reason & Science –covers all faith and looks at all religious ideals, encourages debate and discussions with different religious groups.
UCMUSA –Barbeque, picnic, month-long catering for students during Ramadan, Islamic workshop for members.
Best International Club
The club or society representing an international cultural community on campus that has provided the best all-round service to its members.
Winner: Canterbury Malaysian Students' Association
The Association hold a number of events through the year and have organised a visit from the Malaysian Minister of Foreign Affairs for their members.
Highly Commended: University of Canterbury Chinese Students & Scholars Society (UCCSSS) - UCCSSS hold various events throughout the year and offer unique members discounts. They also offer services such as a free lawyer for their members.
University of Canterbury Indian Students Association (UCiSA) - The UCiSA held the East meets West production which was their biggest event of the year. It was highly successful in developing their club and illustrating the Indian culture.
Best Community Contribution
The club or society that has made the most significant positive contribution to the student experience and the University community through its socially responsible behaviour.
Winner: Student Volunteer Army
9000 volunteers throughout Christchurch community in February totalling 75,000 hours of voluntary work to Christchurch communities. Four silt operations. Sponsor of Youth Vision 2050. Organiser and sponsor with the UCSA of the Creative Critic Competition on the Central City Plan. Partner and sponsor of RebuildChristchurch and Let's Get it Done weekend. Two members aided Japanese workers in community clean ups.
Highly Commended: ENSOC - Use of Member Dominator System to SVA during earthquake clean up, Use of Ensoc Fire truck for transport of food and drink supplies, providing final year structural engineers to assist with building inspections throughout CBD (awarded Fulton Downer Presidents Award), Mo-May raised awareness about prostate cancer raising $2550.
Engineers Without Borders – Assist projects with EcoCARE, Pacific Trust, World Vision, Habitat for Humanity. Continual work from 2010 on the Ambae School water and sanitation project, 200 children affected.
Green Club Award
The Club or society whose actions and events best reflected a knowledge and respect of its effect on the environment.
Winner: CUBA
Beach clean up and awareness day alongside Sustainable Coastlines. Plans to make this an annual event
BREW Club - Partnership with Sustainability Department including sustainable home brew kits, Sustainable Brewing short on YouTube
UC Bike - Highly commended award at the recent Sustainability Awards. Several events/training schemes per week, Promotion of sustainable transport. Decreasing the number of glass bottles at events opting for goons instead.
Best Social Club
The club or society that has improved the student experience by excelling in their provision of social events to its members.
Winner: Gentlemen's Club
Growing to over 1000 members this year, Events include: Bingo night, Bus Trip, Fashion Show, Cocktail Evening, Wine and Cheese evening. Lawn Bowls Day, Golf Tournament, RWC Wine and Quiz Night.
Highly Commended: ENSOC – catering for 2510 Members. ENSOC boasts 15 events this year including The Ball, traffic light party and the infamous BBQs
UCOM –First off-campus event 2011 Graffiti Party, followed that event up with UCOM Gallops, BBQ, Cocktail Party, Deloitte Summer Gala.
Best Sports Club
The club or society that has improved the student experience by excelling in their provision of sporting events to its members.
Winner: UC Hockey
131 active members, eight teams, highest position at uni game six 6 years, umpire developing programme, Charity Hockey Match this March with Lincoln (Earthquake appeal), Mainland Games organisational support.
ENSOC –2x Social rugby teams, 60 players, ENSOC XV -3rd. Civil Vs Mechanical Rugby Cup. ENSOC tug of war, Marlowe Cup Rugby Exchange,. Touch Wednesday Comp- 250 players. Ritz vs Ghetto Uni Hall Girls Rugby Game organisation.
UC Rowing –signed 100+ members 2011. Relocation set up for members due to quakes. September Regatta with UC(won), CPIT, Avon RC, and Lincoln.
Best Marketing
The club or society that has best promoted its services and events, in an original and effective way.
Winner: Gentlemen's Club
Membership drives, fliers, visable GC exec appearances anticipation marketing, banners, social networking, weekly member emails, visual media including promotional videos. All events sold out.
Highly Commended: ENSOC –Ensoc Ball video, Ensoc website, weekly member emails member tee shirts and Ensoc paraphernalia, a sexy Fire Truck, Chalking, Sticker comp, postering campaigns throughout the year plus 12x3 bill board. Text messaging service for 2011 Roundie 500. And not to mention 3850 Facebook friends – real street cred here.
Lawsoc – postering campaigns, Facebook events, advertisements in LAWSOC magazine, videos, fliers, visual and 3D installations, not to mention two budding rap artisits... stick that in your pipe and smoke it.
Best Event
The club or society event that stood out through its excellent organisation, entertainment and high levels of student interaction.
Winner: Lawsoc – Law Ball: A Night at Hogwarts
A 260 person sell out with the Templeton Community Centre turning into the Hogwarts Great Hall.
MUSOC - The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas packing out the Ngaio Marsh at 700 apiece and the Big Top with 250 peeps.
Indian Students' Association – East Meets West Season Two, sold out both nights with over 620 people through and a waiting list of 50.
Best Initiative
The event or programme or investment initiated for the first time in the current University year that best enhanced the student experience.
Winner: ENSOC – Member Dominator
A system for organising membership lists and events, lent to the SVA during earthquake recovery.
SciFi Soc,/Saga,/UC Medival/Fencing,/AnimeSoc –Alignment of these clubs – nerds locked in a room for a weekend putting on a steampunk fashion show, playing with swords, and role playing.
UCOM –UCOM Gallops, Motukarara Raceway, Food stalls, subsidised cider all on the exclusive 'Export Lawn'. The Gallops was a branch out from the usual barbeques. UCOM donated $400 to Motukarara Raceway
Outstanding Contribution
Winner received a $250 cash prize thanks to EXPORT 33
The volunteer club member who has best improved the student experience at the University of Canterbury through their tireless work and support for a club.
Winner: Sarah-Jane O'Connor – PGSA
SJ has enhanced the progress of PGSA in their advocacy, communication, and social events since February. She took one month off her thesis to aid other students affected by the quakes while coordinating the new PGSA space including advertising, logistical issues, and kitchen facilities. SJ used her own funds to set up PGSA version of Fake Foundry at the Fox and Ferret. SJ has also improved PGSA communication through revamped website, social media, and mailing lists.
Katrina Palmer – Gentlemen's Club
Social rep organising two major headline events: GC Cocktail Night and GC Wine and Cheese Evening. Working with UCSA for Winterlude Fashion Show. GC committee shirts, weekend away, and future Gold Day Tournament are all down to KP. As are most of the creative ideas for club events.
Rob Nolan- MOTOSOC
President, member for four years. Rob has maintained the high standard of organising events, the committee, and the club itself. Every event on the MOTOSOC calendar has been run largely due to the fact Rob offered his home as headquarters during the quakes.
The Motosoc Hokitika Wild Ride event was completed and run by Rob encompassing 120 new and old members with a limited marketing campaign and a short turnaround due to quake issues. Rob also ran a 'Charity Track Day' raising $700 for The Red Cross.
Small Supreme Club
Winner received a $350 cash prize thanks to EXPORT 33
The club or society with less than 250 members (at the time of nomination) that has achieved all round excellence in the service of its members.
Winner: UCCSSS
With five months ongoing earthquake support for their members and the local community UCCSSS have proven themselves outstanding contenders for this year's Small Supreme Club.
MUSOC – a tough year with few theatre venues left in the city let alone the entire set of The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas lost in the earthquake, Musoc still managed to transport each audience into their own world of drama, music, and debauchery.
CompSoc – Not just computer nerds, but web-developing, IT-consulting, software-testing, soon-to-be-very-rich computer nerds!
Supreme Club

The club or society that has achieved all round excellence in the service of its members, and significantly enhanced the student experience at UC.
Winner: Student Volunteer Army
9000 volunteers, media and press attention, and all the stuff said in relation to their Community Contribution Award.
ENSOC – Supreme Club recipients in 2010, and following a very similar line this year with a plethora of events up their sleeves, academic support, and general contribution to UC.
Gentlemen's Club – sparing no detail or cost, classy all the way to the bank, Gentlemen's Club is perhaps one of the fastest-growing clubs this year in terms of quality of events and members.
