Candidates for UCSA General Executive 2012
General Executive - Vote for one candidate
General Executive - Vote for one candidate
Tom "Archie" Archibald
Let’s not get overzealous here. A general exec member isn’t going to change the world overnight. Some would say they’re basically just the UCSA’s kitchen hand, passing out the flyers, and cleaning up the mess. I’m a fourth year Northland boy, I’m studying Law and Commerce, and all I want is to do is have a good time at uni. It seems such a waste to miss out on all the awesome stuff that goes on around campus, and the student culture we’ve created. In the past, the done thing has been to have a rant about how this year’s UCSA has been doing it all wrong, but honestly, I reckon they’ve done a great job. Vote for Archie, let’s keep it up and let the good times roll!
Mark Bassett
We're campaigning for a solution to your problems that is So Fricken' Simple.
That is campaigning for Study, Food and Social life.
Campaigning alongside me for Exec is Michael O'Flaherty who shares my views.
Study: Ensuring longer study hours and promoting that lecturer's audio record all lectures to boost study.
Food: Securing longer Cafe hours for late night coffee and ensuring that sandwiches are reasonably priced, 2 Dollar Sandwiches at the most.
Social: Discounts at pools and social sport leagues, more social events (Octoberfest), and viewing major sports events on campus (projector)
Vote for Mark Bassett and Michael O'Flaherty for a life that will be So Fricken Simple.
Simon Bloomberg
Students, my name is Simon. I’ve been studying geology for awhile and am currently doing my MSc part2. OK, I’m a shoot some truth bullets now. Boom! Its times like these you need a Fruju, I don’t even like the bloody things, but you know what, I still want one. Probably pineapple flavour, so good!
Also, Boom! I want to be on the student exec to help make decisions that benefit us as a unit. In the past I’ve been blessed with plenty of drive but no opportunity, punctuality but no meetings to attend, inspiration but no one to inspire, you get the point! Well, being part of the UCSA exec would give me the chance to use my mental utility belt batman style.
Lastly, Boom! I loved going to the foundry for midday beers on campus. I will endeavour to do something about this if elected.
Boom!
Bloomberg.
BOOMBERG!
Catherine Carlaw
Hi, I’m Catherine. I like long walks on the beach and dinner by candle light…..
Haha na I’m determined and stubborn, once I get an idea if I can do it, I will but I’m still a nice person. I’m a first year student but have studied for the last 2 and a bit years.
I fight for what I believe in and that’s why I think I would be perfect as an executive member on the UCSA. I want to make money grow on trees and have rain made out of candy, as well as helping UC to become more attractive to anyone and everyone, even with earthquakes.
So yes I am unusual but I know I can help the uni to become a better place with more fun and exciting events.
So vote for me!!
Hamish Catherwood
Oi you, who never votes every year, its time you voted for ‘Catherwood and Hickson’ for general executive on the UCSA for 2012. Why vote for me. I’ve sat here for three years listening to people promise the world and it never happens, it’s time to act UC. I bring a no nonsense approach and hope to sort simple issues so you the students of UC are not missing out during your time here. These things include sorting out a new foundry or ‘fake foundry’. Also increased activities on campus especially during ‘O Week’ which many have missed out on big time and has always played second fiddle to Otago Uni, well guess what UC it’s time to become number 1. Also like to get on campus activities in all areas (academic and social) to encourage the UC culture to strive.
Vote ‘NO NONSENSE CATHERWOOD & HICKSON”
Anna Christison
Hi,
I'm Anastasia; like the Disney movie, or the singer who has a penchant for animal print.
As an educational institution academic resources are paramount. Our time here also offers other kinds of learning too; new people, new responsibilities and I know recognizing 'learning to learn' within this context is important too.
Having flatted in some places with strong traditions of UCSA involvement I've gained (probably through osmosis) an awareness of what goes on behind the curtains at our University. I didn't go to the halls so I may be an anomaly in some circles, or an Anna-nomaly. I know it’s important to understand that time at Uni means different things to different people.
Here to offer hearty helpings of what makes Uni the best for you, and bite-sized snacks of the real world.
What you want going on behind the scenes.
Anastasia (Anna) Christison.
Megan Coup
I’m Megan Coup and am running for a position on the general exec for 2012. I’m a third year science student returning next year. This is not because I enjoy mouldy clothes, escalating debt and flatmates who need cooking lessons but because Canterbury Uni is an exciting and diverse place to be a part of.
2011 has not been the easiest year for the UCSA and with the end of the world supposedly advancing the UCSA needs to make sure 2012 goes out with a bang! Seriously though, providing you all with services and events that are based on what you need and want and don’t leave your bank balance in overdraft is my top priority. I aim to listen to and voice the student opinion so we can build on the good work of the previous exec. Vote COUP!
P.S. Vote McLAUGHLIN as well – she’s a GB.
Tim Courtney
Hey, I’m Tim Courtney and I am running for general exec in the UCSA elections this year. If I get elected I will make sure that, after the earthquake, this uni continues to be an attractive option for potential students from NZ and around the world. This would make sure a UC degree would be held in such high regard as it has in the past. Many students come here after playing a lot of sports and then give up. I know I was one. I want to make sure they know how easy it is to slot into a team, both social and competitive. Also getting a bar back on campus would be handy. Let’s be honest I am a great option for your vote. So put a big tick by Tim Courtney. Cheers!
Ciska Den Haring
The UCSA is supposed to be the voice of the students and provide help where it is needed. Being a long-time student, new-time candidate for the Exec it’s begun to feel like the UCSA has faded into obscurity. Do you even know where they’re located? In this tiny nook-like lair underneath the library. It’s extremely seedy. But it doesn’t need to be! I’ve had my fair share of beefs with the UCSA and I want to find out if by joining the Exec I can make it a little better for everyone. Or die trying at least. But seriously now, if I had any semblance of a slogan it would go something like this: “I don’t care what we do; just make it as cheap as possible”. I’m a 4th year student with tons of organisational experience running UC Volleyball Club. So if you’re going to vote, vote for me!

Matthew Doody
3rd year Media and Communications
Throughout my time at this university I have seen many elections. Each year we get spun a huge yarn about how the candidates are going to change the university. That is why I have decided not to make endless promises. However there are some things that I would like to see change. The first would be the return of The Foundry to campus. It is the social heart of this university, and many good days have been spent sitting out in the sun enjoying a few beers. The second thing, is the price of food. If I wanted to get mugged I would go down a dark alley at night, not into café 360. Tim and I are approachable and not afraid to stand up for you the students. So that’s why you should vote Matt Doody and Timo Tay for the Exec.
Hannah Duder
Hey there! I’m Hannah Duder, I’m a commerce and arts student. I’m the ‘Duder’ in the Mullins, Duder, Perry campaign and I am running for an executive position on the UCSA. We see 2012 as being a year to rebuild the UCSA ensuring that there is a social hub on campus for students to congregate, socialise and relax. The UCSA is about representing YOU the students; we want to ensure that you have a year filled with social and academic prosperity incorporating different mediums for students to interact. As part of the new UCSA Mullins, Duder, Perry want to work alongside the clubs to help rebuild the university’s social calendar ensuring 2012 is a year to live like it’s the end of the world.
DO THE DUDER.
Vote Mullins, Duder, Perry rebuilding UCSA bigger than Gerry.
Benjamin Helm
Hello, my name is Ben and I am running for a place on the general executive for 2012. The past year has made one thing clear, that clubs and societies are now more than ever the social lifeline of the university. For student life to continue to be enjoyable at Canterbury I believe that two main things need to happen. Firstly, awareness of smaller clubs needs to be increased thus increasing participation and membership. Secondly, the proverbial “red tape” that surrounds events put on by larger clubs needs to be cut. This will mean that more memorable events can be put on for you, the students. In addition to clubs, I believe that the re-opening of the UCSA building and the Foundry should be given higher priority has it would increase student morale. So if you value an enjoyable and balanced university experience, vote HELM for UC general executive 2012!
Tim Hickson
Hey guys and girls Hicko here and I’m running for a general exec position in 2012 alongside Hamish Catherwood. Pretty much the UCSA is a diverse beast with tonnes going on making it difficult for us the members to sometimes know what going on behind the scenes.
Basically what Hickson and Catherwood bring to the table are
- A no nonsense approach to be upfront and tell it like it is , both to you the members and the University itself
- A commitment to ensure that there’s a social space on/close to campus where you can get a reasonably priced jug
- Ensuring there’s good stuff to do on campus be that through the arts (Scared Scriptless etc), sporting events (tug o’ war comp anyone?) and the continuance of the market events etc for the foreseeable future.
So get behind us and vote “No Nonsense Catherwood & Hickson
Kellie Hobbs
I’m Kellie Hobbs, a 1st pro Chemical Engineering student that believes I have what it takes to represent you on the UCSA. Being an Engineering student I know how to communicate efficiently and effectively. I’ve had experience in being a class rep and now I want to step it up a notch. After all of this shaky business you need somebody who’s ready to take action for the students. I would like to see more student facilities to assist with our studies in this current environment. We need to take this opportunity to work with the university authorities to achieve win-wins for the future. I’d like to bring my engineering focus to be part of the UCSA exec. VOTE KELLIE!!
Temiko Jager
Hey everyone!
I’m Temiko, and I’m standing for Gen Exec because I LOVE the University experience and meeting new people. I will represent the voice of the students here, and help in keeping Canterbury Uni fresh with new ideas, programs, and of course epic events! I’m big on environmental sustainability, student welfare, tackling the Levy Issue (more transparency-where is your money going?) and events. The UCSA does so much for students, including the food bank, emergency dental scheme, hardship grants, subsidised $2 rice meals, and organizing events -hello TEA PARTY?! Getting amongst it and helping create new initiatives is my bullshit free promise for you guys!
I’m always keen to hear suggestions and ideas from anyone, so if you see me around Uni, etc at the library or the gym, hit me up.I'm usually wearing bright blue trackpants.
VOTE TEMIKO!!
Peter Jakowetz
Gidday. I’m Peter, a 3rd year Electrical Engineering student running for UCSA Exec. Over the past three years I have been heavily involved in university events, on a club member level as well as on club committees. My involvement in the performing arts at Canterbury has been the highlight of my time so far, and has allowed me to meet people I would never have otherwise talked to. I would like to be part of the exec to ensure the UCSA heads in the right direction for students in this post-quake time. I also want to make sure all students have the opportunity to be part of different clubs that allow them to meet new people and enjoy their time at UC.
Henry Jones
Much like the infamous bench-presser Cameron Leslie I like to finish what I start, regardless of the complications. With 2012 likely to be another testing year for the university a resilient executive who can get their job done will be required. As a young go-getter I’d form a key component of such an executive. I believe strongly in maintaining the points of difference that make Canterbury a unique and rewarding place to study. This means sturdy backing of club activities, development of further student social events and hopefully the timely installation of an adequate Foundry/UCSA building replacement. Alongside this I’d like to see more student input on UCSA decisions and spending through referendums and polling. It is, after all, YOUR association.
Don’t act the goat, VOTE JONESY, your father would.
John King
Hello there fellow students. John "King Kong" King is the name and General Exec is the game. My life philosophy is quite simple, just be a GC. I aim to provide a service to the Students of UC, making 2012 as enjoyable and productive as possible, even when the world is coming to an end. I want to ensure that the $615 student levy that you pay each year is spent in a fair and thoughtful manner. I plan on bringing down the price of food in the cafés, providing more information on what actually happens in the UCSA and getting the student community up and running 100% since the quakes. This means more entertainment and student events that are slightly closer than Addington. Keeping it real is what I’m about.
You can’t go wrong if you vote King Kong.
Alicia Lamb-Miller
Hey, my name is Alicia and I’m studying Political Science, Spanish & English. I am running for the Exec this year as I feel that the current UCSA board has done a fantastic job of getting services and activities for students back up and running since the earthquakes, and I would like to see this legacy continue with events such as Winterlude happening in future years. Campus has the real potential to be the hub of student social life, especially over the next few years while the CBD is being rebuilt. I would especially like to be able to assist clubs and societies as they are one of the best things about being a student here. If elected, I will work to ensure that no-one misses out on the student experience because of earthquakes or anything else Mother Nature has to throw at us. So vote for me ☺. Thanks
Michaela Latimer
We need a UCSA that endeavours to provide tangible solutions to our wants and actual needs: progressive support for the multitude of clubs that envelope our vibrant and diverse student body and stamp UC with our point of difference; a plethora of day and night events; competitive prices for nutritious food; an inspiring gym in which to work off the weekend and a contemporary rebuild of the UCSA’s corner of the campus (including The Foundry!).
As a 4th year BCom/BSc student from UniHall origins, a draughty flat and soured with a looming student loan I have good motive for ensuring we get our money’s worth. My nomination was in the moment they opened and I would be privileged to advocate your thoughts and cultivate your university experience.
So pop a teaspoon of LATIMER into your Exec (and one in for AINSWORTH for good measure) and make your uni life sweeter!
Emmakate McKenzie
Hi I’m Emma and I’m running for a general exec for 2012. I’m currently doing my honours year in Media and Communication at UC. I am on the exec of the Young Nats at UC and UC Norml and I’m also a bar manager by trade at Mad Cow. In 2012 I will further my post grad study at UC and continue to support Christchurch, my home for the last 25 years, in the recovery. To achieve this I have been involved in the UNESCO Youth Voices Challenge, being held over this year in Christchurch. Students at UC have stepped up during our eventful few months and finally started to receive the recognition of our contributions as youth in Christchurch. Maintaining this image and continuing to support a resilient community on campus is what I will ensure, if I'm elected to USCA exec. Vote McKenzie & Adams-Richardson!
Sarah McLaughlin
Hey I’m Sez and I am running for a position on the general exec for 2012. I’m a third year student studying towards a Law and Arts degree and awkwardly still have no idea what I want to do with my life. Something I am sure about though is that the earthquake has taken its toll and student life is just not the same. This situation needs to be resurrected - fast.
Now we have all heard what 2012 is going to bring so let’s make sure, whatever nature decides to throw at us, that next year Canterbury University is at the top of its game. I aim to provide a voice for the students of Canterbury and am committed to bringing you the UC experience you deserve. Vote McLAUGHLIN!
P.S Vote COUP as well - she’s a GB.
James Moore
Do you want MOORE from the UCSA?
MOORE free stuff? MOORE student events and spaces? Cheap healthy food and MOORE of it?
MOORE snow days? I’ll look into it.
I am currently in my fourth year of Engineering and I’m a real student wanting to make real changes to real student issues. I want to ensure that you get MOORE from your $615 Student Services Levy. The levy needs to be spent in areas where MOORE students will benefit. Good value, healthy and filling food available on campus so that you don't have to walk to the supermarket. Cheap caffeine to get you through those all-nighters. MOORE dental care options. MOORE phones available on campus for local calls. And of course bigger and better on-campus social events and UCSA facilities. Vote MOORE for smarter decisions on what matters to you. Get MOORE of what you want from your UCSA.
Mike Mullins
Hi guys, I’m Mike Mullins, a 4th year LLB/BCom student otherwise known as Mullz, or during my short rap career, Mullz Murder. I have been involved with clubs and societies for the past two years at UC and much like a KFC double down, I to have a passion for bigger opportunity. I miss the foundry like I miss Michael Jackson. If elected I promise to go harder than Cialis in order to create a new beer garden at UC. Our team will target the private sector to pull sponsorship and product to hook up the clubs, which we recognize as the backbone of UC. Sometimes I feel as though Robert Mugabe runs the UC cafes, and this Zimbabwean hyperinflation needs to stop now! Mullins, Duder, Perry offers you the chance to be apart of the NEW Innovative UCSA, YOUR UCSA.
Vote Mullins, Duder, Perry
Rebuilding UCSA bigger than Gerry.
Tom Nation
CARES ABOUT STUFF – PASSIONATE ABOUT THINGS
I am a normal student - I am 4th year studying a BCOM/LLB, from Christchurch, I went to Uni Hall, I “Done-Good” after the earthquake, I go to UCSA events and I use its services.
I believe service provision is the UCSA’s core business. I want to continue to improve this, along with events in 2012. I am an effective voice for students on issues affecting us, such as the Council’s plan to make the Liquor Ban permanent - which to me is anti-students and bollocks.
Having previously been a part of LAWSOC as Social-Officer, and my involvement with two local sports clubs, I have learnt how committees and organisations work - how it is necessary to balance competing points of view to the best interest of members.
If you too care about stuff and are passionate about things you should vote for me.
Sarah-Jane O’Connor
Yep, I’m a career student and proud of it! I’ve been studying at UC in some form since 2003 and am currently enrolled part-time while I finish my PhD in Biology. Throughout the five plus years that I’ve been a postgraduate, I’ve been on departmental and college committees plus I’ve spent 18 months on the Postgraduate Students’ Association (PGSA) executive.
After February, when half our PGSA exec buggered off on international exchanges, I stepped up as President and kept the club running through the post-quake disarray. Following the June aftershocks, I suspended my studies for a month and worked solely on postgraduate advocacy.
I love this university, but there has never been a strong postgraduate presence on campus and that needs to change. Step one: let’s get a postgraduate exec member in charge of the postgraduate portfolio!
Vote O’Connor, get a postgraduate on Exec!
Michael O’Flaherty
We're campaigning for a solution to your problems that is So Fricken' Simple.
That is campaigning for Study, Food and Social life.
Campaigning alongside me for Exec is Mark Bassett who shares my views.
Study: Ensuring longer study hours and promoting that lecturer's audio record all lectures to boost study.

Vote for Michael O'Flaherty and Mark Bassett for a life that will be So Fricken Simple.
Hannah Orchard
I’m a 2nd year CAPE and campus living student, who has international second language living experience (AFS year in Italy), and is really into sports – mountain biking, turbo touch, football, long board and snowboarding. A member of CUBA and ENSOC and competitor in the Jib and Uni Snow games. UC is unique with its academic standards, its clubs, societies, events and our new earthquake induced ethos of volunteerism which has changed the region’s attitude to and helped improve student reputation across the country. I hope we can build on that reputation as the students who study and care. As a 2nd year student I look at things with fresh eyes and ideas. I know what it’s like to live in a new culture, struggling with another language, learning new and different ways of life while studying and having fun. Different is not good or bad it is just different!
Ahmad Osama
Hi, I’m Ahmad and I wish to be a general executive in 2012 for the UCSA. In my four years at UC I have studied Biology and Geography. Next year I plan to study further at teachers college. My studies have cultivated a passion towards the environment and sustainability. Despite growing up in Taranaki, I was born in Christchurch and love it here, earthquakes or not! Other hobbies of mine include running and swimming. I am confident, ambitious and have excellent communication skills. I will use these to represent the students of 2012 and ensure they are kept well informed throughout the year. I wish to be in this position so I can give something back to Canterbury University, a place where I have been successful and is therefore close to my heart. Please vote for me so I can represent you next year.
Morgan Perry
Yo! For those of you who don’t know me or have declined my Facebook friend request I’m Morgan Perry. I’m a current UCSA Executive, Science and soon to be Law kid roaming the pathways at UC. Me and my Facebook friends including such people as Alf Stewart and the Briscoes lady think 2012 is a very important year where 12 revolutionary students join forces, or rings, much like Captain Planet did in the early 90’s, to rebuild a UCSA that ensures students have a hub to congregate, socialise and relax - two words ‘beer garden’, not ‘bear garden’, that’s just downright dangerous. Mullins, Perry, Duder, want a transparent, performance driven executive. An organisation that thrives on club support, student interaction and academic advancement. We offer you the chance to be apart of the NEW UCSA, YOUR UCSA. So on Election Day vote Mullins, Duder, Perry rebuilding UCSA bigger than Gerry.
Michael Richards
They say the best way to start a self-promoting blurb is with humour. I won’t do that.
My name is Mikey Richards, currently studying Media Communications and Cinema. My favourite day is my birthday and I’m always willing to pay extra coin for some 4-ply Cotton Soft action. If elected, my main priority is to re-establish the student culture in Christchurch. I want to challenge the way Christchurch’s scene is perceived. Boring and bland are not words anyone wants to associate with. It’s time to make a change and I believe the people who can do this are, well us – the students. We need more culture, more art, more events, more music and more entertainment! Being a student is hard enough without having anything to do in our downtime. So have your say on Election Day and consider me, Mikey Richards to be a part of your executive committee!
Jalanda Smith
Hello =) I’m Jalanda your local friendly broke cosc student.
I took a year off before coming to uni and trust me when I say I’m definitely feeling the lack of dollars for fun! At present on campus we are forced to decide between our lunch money, our fun money or another week completely broke. I for one think that the point of the UCSA Exec committee is to keep our stomachs, our sanity and our well being as top priority and pursue the issues that everyone keeps screaming out. Cheaper/healthier/wider range of food (we desperately need some good stuff that doesn't cost us so damn much), more affordable social events (but keep them awesome) and more welcoming social/eating areas on campus. I am so amped to contribute to the awesomifying of uni next year but I very much am going to need your vote! Dooo iiit!
Sara Smith
Sport is my passion, an area the UCSA are currently focusing on. For two years I have presided over the UC Rowing Club during this time we achieved our most successful season from the last ten years. I want to create more awareness of sport and recreation services available at Canterbury, and look at new innovative and fresh ideas to encourage more participation and increase the sports status of our University. Sport is my love but it is not just the game that contributes to this, it is the friendly loyal trusting atmosphere that is created within a team that is most important. That is the relationship I aim to foster between students and the UCSA through voice and follow through. I want to be your channel of communication, I am easy going, friendly and committed, nothing should be put in the too hard basket, everything deserves a chance!
Chrislynn Soong
I love our University! You've got to pick someone who is as passionate as I am about our student life. Recall all that baking whilst shoveling with the SVA? The CHRISTCHURCH BAKING ARMY was an initiative I founded that fed our community and troops during those nasty earthquakes. Loving on people through baking is what I do best and I would love to carry on that spirit while serving YOU. No one loves a dull university and post-quake UC need not be a boring one. I've got fresh ideas to add to the vibrancy of our Uni life. Loved the Winter Market. Lets keep that going! On my agenda are student welfare, better study environments, affordable food and of course keeping YOU happy and entertained!
Vote for SOONG for UCSA General Executive 2012. Who knows? A muffin or two might be headed your way!
Churrr
Timo Tay
3rd year Economics and Finance
I believe in “Stacking Up Your Gains”, in lectures, library and at the gym. Food and libraries, an essential part of every student’s life, without it we simply can’t study. I know the current food we get on campus is pricey and not exactly healthy. VOTE for ME as UCSA Exec and I will see that come next year we get some good, healthy, high protein (yes I’m a gym junkie), nutritional food that doesn’t cost half of your student allowance. I want to push for libraries to be a conducive learning environment with longer opening hours! GTL = GYM, TIMO, LIBRARY. Vote for me and I might even see that Juice TV is NEVER played at the uni gym again. Also… Vote for Matt Doody cause he’s my partner in crime. CHUR!
James Walker
My fellow UC brethren what is down? / So I’ve got your attention just read this now. / Name is Jimmy, running for a spot on Exec. / I’m the sort of guy who will show some respect / To the thoughts and opinions of the UC crew, / Making it a better place for me and for you. / Been round this place a good couple of years, / Doing a BA but not a BA bum as you might fear. / Sport is my focus; it’s my real passion, / So if elected I’d like to bring us all a little more action. / Uni Games to more Interfaculty competition, / Revive some dead or start new sporting traditions. / Social Sports up to Elite, and all the way through, / I want lines in Canta and Emails bout all of you. / I’m dead serious and it’ll be done no doubt, / All I need is your vote to help me out.
