The President's Piece

Winners are grinners

I am assuming that you will all have spent the weekend either smashing out assignments, or studying, so I figure that you will all be a little edgy. So I won't make any outlandish claims or sudden movements, as I know that after overexposure to library environments, that can be all that is needed to tip people over the edge.

Having said that, there are a select few students who have been taking some time out to get recognition for the amazing work that they have done throughout the year. Some of this recognition has been in the form of the UCSA award ceremonies, with the final leg of this season taking place this week, in the form of the UCSA Supreme Club Awards.

Prior to this, the Madcaps Performing Arts Awards took place last week, and congratulations go to Musoc for their triumph in the Blue Riband category of "Best Show" for their O-Week musical The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. Also a big congratulations to all those who performed at the ceremony; the talent on show was amazing. Except Lawsoc, who forgot their music; shame on you.

Following that we had the sporting Blues Awards, which was bit of a quieter night. Without casting any aspersions on the performing arts kids, I would say the athletes were being a bit more circumspect around the alcoholic beverages than the Madcaps attendees. But nevertheless it was another great night, and congratulations go to Sophie Devine who was named Sportsperson of the Year for her achievements in representing New Zealand at senior level in both hockey and cricket – while still studying. Although she could not make it to the awards ceremony, she did find time to record an emotional acceptance speech video. It was a lot like the speech Halle Berry made when she was the first African-American woman to win an Oscar for Best Actress. The similarities were uncanny.

Throughout all this talk of awards, you may feel somewhat left out. So to congratulate you on your ability to read until the end of this column, and your overall incredible abilities, I would like to reward you with some free tickets to the Tea Party. However, as I don't have an unlimited number, this gift will be limited to the first two people who, after reading this column on Wednesday, turn up to the UCSA office with a drawn on moustache and name one of the acts from the Tea Party lineup. And you will forever be remembered as winners, and as the Champions of the People (or anonymously join the crowd of 2998-ish others who head to the Tea Party - one or the other).

Stoked I made it the whole column without mentioning Dan Carter. Have a good week,

Kohan
