Sustainability
The Onsite UCSA Orchard
Greetings fellow students. Of recent the UCSA has become more active in its drive towards sustainability. The student exec member for sustainability (that's me – David Holliday) has had the pleasure of helping implement this drive.
It began when I was approached by a student and sustainability advocate with an idea to have an onsite orchard at UC. The UCSA were all for the idea (one might say they were keen as a bean), hence the UCSA provide a grant to get near a dozen fruit trees! Mario Fichtner (the aforementioned student) and myself set out on a journey of epic proportions to hunt down a variety of sweet fruit trees for campus. The epic journey took us to Lyttelton, Templeton, and Minas Tirith, in which we found the most succulent fruit trees throughout all of Gondor.
A mix of apple, apricot, pear, and fig trees have since been retrieved and planted at the Dovedale community garden. This is a free resource for students, so if you're interested to find out more, check out the UC sustainability website at http://www.sustain.canterbury.ac.nz/
If students believe the voice of sustainability could be communicated more efficaciously, I'd like to help with vouching your concerns. If you do have a concern, email me on drh74@uclive.ac.nz
